Frequently Asked Questions

  • Ironwood Furniture Studio is a Los Angeles custom hardwood furniture studio serving clients throughout Southern California, including Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades, Malibu, Pasadena, Calabasas, Orange County, and nearby areas.

For select commissions, we also work with clients outside California and can coordinate freight as part of the overall project scope.

  • Yes. We take select long-distance commissions and prepare each piece for freight with professional crating, shipment insurance, and careful delivery planning. We have shipped custom furniture to Nevada, Florida, Utah, New York, and New Hampshire.

For long-distance commissions, freight cost is established as part of the overall project scope before production begins. We crate each piece ourselves and insure the shipment to help protect the furniture in transit. Each crate is built around the size of the piece, and the delivery method is planned with the same care as the build itself.

  • Yes. Remote commissions are handled through photos, measurements, drawings, design references, and SketchUp design previews. We guide the process so the proportions, materials, construction, and final use are clear before production begins.

This works best for clients who value custom furniture, hardwood craftsmanship, and the idea of commissioning a piece directly from the maker.

  • We design and build custom hardwood furniture, including dining tables, coffee tables, desks, bookcases, shelving pieces, media furniture, bars, display pieces, and one-of-a-kind furniture commissions.

Our work is best suited for clients who want a piece made specifically for their space, with better materials, careful proportions, traditional woodworking joinery, and a level of craftsmanship that is difficult to find in standard retail furniture.

  • Ironwood Furniture Studio is a father-and-son workshop that combines traditional woodworking joinery with modern machinery. My father has over 40 years of fine woodworking experience, and every piece is shaped by proportion, material knowledge, and a deep understanding of the nature of wood.

We are not a resale furniture company or a mass-production shop. Our work is designed, built, finished, and handled with the judgment that comes from years of hands-on woodworking experience.

  • Yes. Most custom furniture commissions begin with measurements, inspiration images, photos of the space, and a clear discussion of how the piece will be used. From there, we can create SketchUp design previews to resolve the proportions, layout, and details before production begins.

The design process is collaborative, but guided. Clients bring the space, the need, and the direction. We bring the woodworking knowledge, construction experience, and judgment needed to turn the idea into a well-built piece.

  • Item descriptionWe often work with hardwoods such as walnut, white oak, maple, and other quality woods, along with high-grade plywoods, veneers, and specialty sheet goods when they are the right choice for the project.

Material selection is part of the design process. We choose materials based on appearance, structure, stability, use, and the long-term behavior of the piece.

  • Item Both have a place in fine woodworking. Solid hardwood is often best for dining tables, coffee tables, desks, exposed edges, legs, frames, and sculptural furniture details.

High-quality plywood, veneer work, or specialty panels can be better for large surfaces and pieces that need long-term stability. The right choice depends on the design, the scale, and how the piece will be used.

  • Lead time depends on the scope of the commission, current workload, material availability, finish requirements, and delivery method. Many custom furniture projects take several weeks from deposit to completion, while larger or more detailed commissions may take longer.

We do not rush work that needs proper design, joinery, finishing, or handling. The schedule is discussed before the project begins so expectations are clear.

  • Most custom furniture commissions begin with a deposit to place the work in our schedule and begin production. The remaining balance is due when the piece is complete or ready for delivery, depending on the project.

For long-distance commissions, crating, shipment insurance, and freight cost are established as part of the overall project scope.

  • The best place to start is with photos of the space, rough dimensions, inspiration images, and a short description of what you want the piece to accomplish. From there, we can review the project, discuss materials and direction, and determine whether it is a good fit for our workshop.

Once the scope is clear, we can provide pricing, design direction, and the next steps.

  • Where is Ironwood Furniture Studio located, and do you have a showroom?

Ironwood Furniture Studio is based in the Los Angeles area. We work from a private woodworking studio rather than a public retail showroom. Studio visits are available by appointment for clients who want to discuss a custom furniture commission, review materials, or see examples of our work in person.
